Development

In May 2011, reports claimed that Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif would come together for a film titled Ek Tha Tiger.[6] The script for the film had been completed in November 2010,[7] however, it underwent changes in February 2012.[8] It was Khan's first venture with Yash Raj Films and marked his fourth film opposite Katrina after Yuvvraj.[6] Before starting the film, he postponed a project titled Sher Khanby his brother Sohail Khan, as he had to allot his dates.[9] His fee for the venture was INR32 crore (US$5.79 million).[10] The film was also one of Katrina's first in the action genre.[11] Ranvir Shorey was signed in for a supporting role.[12] Kabir Khan was announced to be the director.[6] On May 3, a photo shoot was held with the lead actors.[7]

Filming

Initial reports claimed that principal photography would start by June 2011.[6] The first schedule began on September 2011 in Dublin, Ireland. It had previously been postponed for a short time, when Salman set off to USA for a surgery regarding his condition ofTrigeminal neuralgia.[13] Filming took place at the Trinity college,[14] and the Ha'penny Bridge. A set of action sequences were also shot in the city.[15] During filming in Dublin, the Irish crew of the film held a demonstration and halted the shooting temporarily, reportedly due to filming conditions and payment.[16] The filming of the second schedule took place in Istanbul for two months.[17] In February 2012, the film’s cast and crew went to Havana, Cuba, to shoot for one month.[18] There, Salman shot a cameo scene for a local tourism company. The sets used in the film were featured in the ad.[19] Following the period, script issues resulted in the postponement of the film’s planned shoot in Hong Kong.[20] Afterwards, a three day schedule was completed in Delhi.[21] The filming ended in June 2012 after the last schedule was shot in Bangkok.[22] Salman had to undergo a fitness programme titled 'Dirty Running' for his action sequences over 30 days.[23] Katrina Kaif played her role without makeup.[24]

Soundtrack

Initially, Pritam was signed as the composer of Ek Tha Tiger. The first digital poster of the film credited him as such.[25] However, he opted out of the film later due to date clashes with yet an other Yash Raj projects, Dhoom 3. Chopra, who had worked with Sohail Sen's in their film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, roped him in to compose for the film.[26] The lyrics were penned by Neelesh Misra.[27] A song titledJaaniyan which had vocals by Asif Nawaz, a Pakistani artist was reported to have been leaked from the film's soundtrack. However,YRF officials denied the news, saying that the album was not in any danger of being leaked.[28] A single track named "Mashallah" crooned by Wajid Ali and Shreya Ghoshal was released on 12th July 2012.[29]

Critical response

Following the soundtrack's release on July 19th, critics unanimously gave positive reviews to the album. Critic Joginder Tuteja felt that none of the songs "puts you off", but still emphasized that "one expected it to have gone all the way further up". He gave it 3.5 stars out of 5.[30] Contrarily, the Indo-Asian News Service rated the album 4 stars and claimed that the audio "offers the listener the romantic and action flavour of the movie", calling it "an entertaining affair with an array of sounds for music lovers." However, the song 'Banjaara' was noted as a "an ordinary composition with overtly simple lyrics."[31] Devesh Sharma of the Filmfare magazine felt that the album had a "situational feel" and was a "tad disappointing" as compared to the "pulsating music" in Khan's previous films. He rated it 4 stars.[32]Purva Desai of the Times of India, while calling the album a "good effort, fresh and new", rated it 4 stars, but still felt that the remixes could have been "skipped".[33]

Marketing

The first-look poster was released in August 2011,[34] whilst the film's first teaser was released on May 10, 2012 along with the filmIshaqzaade.[35][36] The theatrical trailer received more than 1 million views upon release within 2 days, making it the largest for a Bollywood film.[37] The Pakistani Government was reported to have banned the airing of the film's promotional material due to a belief that the film portrayed the ISI in negative light. The PEMRA told that no such ban is in place.[38] Promotional tours were carried out in the cities of New DelhiAhmedabad,[39] and Lucknow.[40] The makers tied up with soft drink company Thumbs up and engaged in aconsumer promotion across 10 Indian cities. These were New Delhi, MumbaiHyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, KanpurAllahabad,AgraMeerut and Ghaziabad.[41]
As a part of the promotion, an event was held to launch a series of comic books based on the film. Referred to with the term 'Yomics' or 'Ycomics', their sales commenced on July 2012, before the film's release, and would continue until the Diwali festival.[42] The books were 30 pages long and also consisted of characters from the film Hum Tum. The first one was titled 'Ek Tha Tiger - Mahasagar Ki Suraksha'. Post release, the comics failed to generate a positive word-of-mouth. Reviewer Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungamacommended the design, but explained that the main story failed to meet his expectations of a "deeper" plot, "exciting" narrative and a "tighter" script.[43]

Release

Ek Tha Tiger releases worldwide on 15th August, the Independence day of India. It will be screened in 3000 screens over the country, marking the largest domestic release for a Bollywood film.[44] Around 60 percent of the first weekend sales received an advanced booking prior to the release.[45] Selected multiplexes increased the ticket prices of the film above the normal rate.[46]

cars 2012

This summer is one of the busiest the country has ever seen, with people travelling from far and wide to support the Olympic Games. Wherever you are going; getting your car ready and your journey planned will keep you cool despite the summer rush.

Road safety organisation, and the number one for breakdown cover in the UK, GEM Motoring Assist urges drivers to ensure their vehicle has been completely checked before setting off, to make their journey as stress-free as possible. David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, comments: “With lots of people staying in the UK for their summer break this year because of the Olympics, there will be scores of families taking long journeys on our busy roads. The economic downturn has put serious pressure on British motorists, but we urge drivers not to ignore the importance of safety. Breaking down is a huge concern as more and more people spend less money on car maintenance, so we want this advice to help drivers avoid any unnecessary hazardous situations.” General summertime tips: Always prepare your car before a long journey. Check: tyres, brakes, windscreen wash, lights, oil and water levels prior to travelling. If towing a caravan, ensure you carry out suitable checks for its roadworthiness too. Keep an eye on your petrol levels, especially if driving in the countryside and you are unsure where the next filling station will be. Try to never let the gauge fall below one quarter. Make sure you have adequate car breakdown cover that will get you to your destination with minimal disruption in the unfortunate event of a breakdown – and make sure you have your emergency call-out number with you. Plan your journey so you know where you are going, taking a map or GPS system with you, plus telephone number for your destination in case you do get lost or break down. Allow extra time to get to your destination if travelling at peak times. Better still, try and avoid Friday evenings when everyone else will be on the road. In case of a breakdown: Breaking down on the side of the road can be extremely hazardous. Consider your own safety first – if possible get your vehicle off the road and ensure all passengers are safe. Place a warning triangle at a suitable distance prior to the scene and switch on your hazard lights. Make sure every passenger wears a reflective jacket or tabard. If it’s warm and you wish to leave the car, exit with extreme caution on the side of the car away from the traffic. Find somewhere to sit that is a good distance away from the road and fumes and where you can keep an eye out for help to arrive. Of particular note, in any breakdown situation don’t forget to tell the breakdown company if you have children on board. On a Motorway: Switch on your hazard lights and pull as far as possible onto the hard shoulder turning your wheels away from the road – do not use a warning triangle. You must leave the vehicle from the left hand doors and keep well away from the carriageway. GEM has a FREE information leaflet ‘Motorist Breakdown and Emergency Guide’ which is available to download free of charge by visiting www.motoringassist.com/leaflets. David Williams MBE, concludes: “We hope drivers find our leaflet helpful, and we ask everyone to keep a copy in their glove compartment. We do, however, pride ourselves on our service and, should the worst happen, we will be there to help our members out of a difficult or even dangerous situation as quickly and comfortably as possible.” Tagged as: Economic downturn, GEM, Good summer weather, Hazardous situations, Long drives, Motoring Advice, Motoring Assist, Olympic games, Summer Driving, uk New Post: Do you think car insurance is too expensive?
